Craigmillar Castle is one of Scotland's best-preserved medieval castles, located just a few miles south-east of Edinburgh city centre. Its impressive 14th-century tower house forms the core, surrounded by a 15th-century courtyard wall and later additions, showcasing centuries of architectural development. The castle is most famously associated with Mary Queen of Scots, who sought refuge here in 1566 following the murder of David Rizzio, and where the 'Craigmillar Bond' was signed, plotting the murder of her husband Lord Darnley. Visitors can explore the great hall, the queen's bedchamber, the kitchen, and climb to the battlements for panoramic views of Edinburgh, Arthur's Seat, and the Firth of Forth. Its well-preserved structure offers a fascinating insight into medieval Scottish life, architecture, and political intrigue.
